The world is drinking less alcohol — except Americans

Some consumers are opting for an ‘adventurous’ drinking experience

People worldwide are drinking less alcohol — for the first time in 15 years. The U.S., however, was one notable exception.

The global decline is small. Global alcohol consumption dipped 0.7% to about 248 billion liters in 2015 from 249.7 billion liters in 2014, according to data from market-research firm Euromonitor International. But it’s the first time the firm has tracked a decrease in global alcohol sales — sales have gone up consistently every year since 2001, when Euromonitor began tracking that data.

Although certain drinks have become less popular — particularly vodka and rum — analysts have said the overall decline likely isn’t because of a change in taste, but it has happened for economic reasons.

They pointed out that alcohol sales dipped in China to 57.6 billion liters in 2015 from 59.7 billion liters in 2014 and in Brazil to 15 billion from 15.4 billion liters. China and Brazil are two major economies that have struggled in recent years.

Economic downturns affect drinking in several ways, studies have shown. The number of people drinking alcohol during the 2008 to 2009 recession in the U.S. dropped; an estimated 880,000 fewer people drank during those years than did during 2006 to 2007, according to a 2013 study by researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health, Stanford University’s Department of Medicine and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Although the number of people drinking declined, people who did drink were slightly more likely to binge; an estimated 770,000 people binged on alcohol more frequently than they did in the past, the study said.

North America is the exception to recent global declines and hasn’t seen the drop in alcohol consumption. In 2015, North Americans bought 33.8 billion liters of alcohol, an increase from 33.1 billion liters in 2014. The continent has had a stronger economy, plus the popularity of microbreweries and the craft beer movement has given alcohol sales a boost, said Euromonitor International’s senior alcoholic drinks analyst Spiros Malandraki.
